One of Australia's unique birds is the Kookaburra with its unmistakable laughing sound. It was originally called a Laughing Jackass by the early settlers and has to be one of the most loved and recognisable of Australia's birdlife. Most school children learn the song: 'Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree. Merry, merry king of the bush is he. Laugh, Kookaburra laugh! Kookaburra, gay your life must be!'
